Here&#8217;s how to make one using that empty growler you&#8217;ve been meaning to fill with a local brew.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/yeast_starter.jpg\" alt=\"yeast starter\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Ingredients<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>1 cup light DME (dry malt extract)<\/li>\n<li>1\/4 tablespoon of yeast nutrient<\/li>\n<li>Yeast &#8211; your choice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Equipment<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>medium-large pot<\/li>\n<li>64 oz. growler bottle or pyrex flask<\/li>\n<li>#5 rubber stopper<\/li>\n<li>Air lock<\/li>\n<li>sanitizer<\/li>\n<li>something to stir with &#8211; no porous<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Process<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Sanitize your fermenting vessel and airlock<\/li>\n<li>Bring 1 liter of water (1 quart) of water to a boil. Add<br \/>\n  DME and yeast nutrients, stir in and watch for boil-overs. Boil for ~10 minutes<\/li>\n<li>Cool wort to 80F and transfer to your fermenting vessel. I&#8217;m using a 64 oz. growler<\/li>\n<li>Aerate the wort well. If you have a bottle of O<sub>2<\/sub>, you know what to do<\/li>\n<li>Pitch the yeast, lightly agitate the vessel, and cap with the airlock<\/li>\n<li>Let the yeasties ferment<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Fermentation will probably start overnight, and you can use it as soon as yeast has started settling on the bottom of the vessel. Most people make a starter 2 days before brewing.
